She wiggled against his side trying to get free, but after he kissed her behind her ear she calmed down. Slowly he released his grip on her, but he had a feeling that wouldn't last long. Markus sighed as she darted out of his grip and flew into the stall. She spoke softly to her mare and went to sit by her head.
What a lovely frickin' picture. Markus' jaw set and he stepped forward to the stall door. His hand gripped the frame of the stall and his knuckles turned white. Had she just not heard him? No, she decided not to listen. Closing his eyes he counted quickly to ten and then he was allowed to relax his hand. However when he spoke anyone would have been able to tell he was angry with her, agitated would have been a mild word for it. "Hannah, why did you disregard what I said?" His voice was low and angered and his brows were pinched. "This is not your dog who is giving birth! I know you have a strong bond with this mare, but she's still a horse. Her instincts in birthing are that you are a predator and nothing more. This especially because she is maiden. Get out of her stall and stand here!" He motioned to his side by pointing in a strict manner. If she wanted to act like a child he would treat her like one. "If you stay in her stall you will do more harm than good. You will stress her mentally which may hurt your foals. Get out of the stall."
Markus crossed his arms in a stubborn matter and stared at her with his dark brown eyes. She doesn't understand that at this moment Firefly's instincts are taking over and either she, Firefly, or the foals will be hurt. Hannah needs to learn that she has to detach herself from the situation sometimes. Yes this is her baby, but that doesn't mean the mare is going to tolerate everything she does. An older more experienced broodmare perhaps, but not a maiden mare. That was unheard of. His stance remained firm and his muscles tense from his anger waiting for her to join him outside of Firefly's stall.

Hannah looked up at him and took her hands off of Firefly. How dare he! He hardly knew her, and he certainly did not know Firefly to make such a call. She slowly stood up and brushed the shavings off her pants and walked away from Firefly and towards him. Markus, you do not know Firefly like I do. She trusts me, and you have no right to make that kind of judgement call. If you want to birth these foals, then go for it cowboy," she said and handed him the walkie talkie in her hand, closed the stall door, and walked away. Yep, her pride got the better of her, and she did not want to be told what to do in regards to her horse. She ran her fingers through her long hair and huffed softly. She fought back tears, and her lip trembled. All she wanted to do was to be there next to Firefly, she didn't like just sitting outside her stall, and watching the action happen.
She crossed her arms and a few stray tears came down her face. Firefly still laid there and neighed loudly as if calling for Hannah to come back, but actually she was starting to feel labor pains. Was it time? She slowly got up and paced around her stall slowly. Hannah walked around the corner of the barn to an extension with extra stalls, and walked up the stairs to the barn office. Inside there was a big couch and she turned on the foaling stall tv and watched Firefly from there. She sat on the couch, and hugged her knees. She was so hurt by how he treated her, but he probably knew what was best. She had little experience in birthing foals, even when she was out at her grandfathers, she would either come after the foals were born or she would have to watch it from the birthing tv. She took some deep breaths and looked down and then curled up on the couch just watching Firefly.

Markus gripped the walkie talkie in his hand. He had tried to tell her the nice way hadn't he? She was being a child, a bratty little four year old. Sighing he leaned over Firefly's stall to check on her. Just a peek and then he was gone. Firefly was doing fine, she would be a good mother. As far as he could tell there would be no problems either, though he shouldn't count his chickens before they hatched.
Leaning against the stall door he scratched the back of his neck. He couldn't believe she just ran off like that! It's not like he told her she couldn't watch, just that she needed to watch outside of the stall. Seriously, how many foals had she birthed? Markus had been an assistant trainer at his show barn since he was twelve and had helped birth at least twenty foals by now. She'd be ticked it she didn't get to watch this though. "Uhhh," Looking up he whispered, "Lord help me." Then he stomped after that infuriating female.
His anger hadn't totally dissipated at her acting like a four year old yet. She should act her age. How was he to hold a relationship with a woman who couldn't even be told no once in a while? How was he to fall in love with someone who never wanted to know his opinions and would never listen to any corrections. Markus pushed open the door to the lounge. What he saw there shocked him, and his brows furrowed.
Hannah was curled up on the couch crying watching Firefly on the TV. He sighed exasperated. "Hannah," Frustration was clear in his voice, "I'm sorry I yelled at you, but you need to learn to listen and to take advice." Walking toward her he sat next to her on the couch, but didn't touch her. "Your mare looks like she is going to be fine, and you'll regret not being there for the birth." He looked up at the TV to make sure it didn't already happen. Surprisingly he could see the front feet of the first foal peeking through. "Here." Laying the walkie talkie beside her he stood up and walked to the door, then second guessing himself he threw his phone next to her on the couch as well. "I'm going home. Call me if you need any help." Then he pushed open the door and headed towards home.

Hannah listened to him and she sniffled and wiped away any stray tears. Okay, fine she was a brat. She didn't like to take orders from people. It would have to take a strong man to tie her down and tell her what to do. She had the spirit of a unwilling foal. Stubborn and foolish. She was hard to love sometimes, and yet she was surprised that any guy would want to love and care for her. She was so hard on herself whenever a guy would walk away because of how she was. She wanted that fairy tale romance, she wanted to be swept off her feet. When she looks at Markus, she can see herself with him because he was a guy who was persistent and always would come back to her after she pushes him away.
She listened to him and then looked at him and nodded, " Yeah, I'll call you if anything happens," she said softly and touched his hand, but he walked away. She watched him leave, and she sat there looking at the television. The baby was slowly coming out, and she smiled. She walked down to her stall and leaned against the door and watched as the first baby dropped, and she wanted to cry. She was getting to witness her mare giving birth, and it was such a magical thing. " Good momma, keep going," she said and smiled. She called Markus and told him the first baby was out. " Should I wait to go in till the second baby comes out," she asked watching Firefly.

As soon as he reached the cabin the phone was already ringing. Had something gone wrong already? Markus threw everything down and snatched the phone up. "Hello?" Hannah explained how the first foal was born and she wanted to know if she would be allowed to go in the stall now. He smiled despite himself. She had listened to him after all! "You need to wait until both foals bond with their mother. If they don't and see you first, they will think you are their mother and this is a bad bad idea." Markus had never been a fan of imprinting, but he admited that doing it right could bring some benefits. Unfortunately too many people did this wrong and that brought on so many issues. Hannah had never birthed a foal before and he thought it best to not imprint for this reason. "I'll be right over. You have to collect the after birth for the vet and I'm sure you'd rather not do that." Even Markus had to scrunch up his nose at the idea.
When he hung up the phone he ran back over to the barn. Grabbing a wheel barrel he went back to Firefly's stall. "How's she doing?" Markus peeped in the stall to check on mommy. Two beautiful foals laid next to their mother and Firefly was duteously licking them clean. "As soon as the two of them are up and nursing you can go check on mommy and babies." Sometimes there was this odd occurrence where foals didn't nurse right away when they should. This shouldn't be an issue but one always watched for it at a birthing anyway.
Silently Markus took her hand and settled against the stall door to watch the new family. Some day he hoped to have a family of his own. He hoped he would be a good dad, but he had his doubts. Sometimes his temper was too quick. He looked at Hannah then and let his eyes roam over her and see how beautiful she is. It was way too early to think about these things, but Markus couldn't help himself.
ooc: sorry Hannah, I'm so sick. Uhh I hate being sick.

Hannah heard him when he said she had to get the after birth up, and she was shocked by his tone. Did he not think that she couldn't handle goo that came out of a horse? She held almost every barn job you could think of. If she could handle mucking a stall and assisting a vet, then she could handle after birth. She rolled her eyes at his comment, "What, you think a city girl like me can't handle what comes out of a horse? You've got a lot to learn about me cowboy. Oh, here comes the next foal. Gotta go," she said quickly and hung up the phone and watched as the baby come out. She jumped up and down and happily clapped as she watched both babies on the ground. She quickly took a picture with her phone and sent it to Heather, and called the vet.
She stepped away from the stall and paced back and forth, and waited for Markus to get there. She saw him walk quickly up the barn aisle and she ran into his arms and hugged him around his neck, " Two healthy foals. I got the birth out, but I didn't check if they were boys or girls yet," she said letting go and walked over to the stall with him. They saw the foals resting with their mom, and pretty soon they would start to try to get up. She looked at them and softly yawned. They took a step back to let them bond. Hannah ran her fingers through her long hair and felt Markus take her hand. She lightly held it, and looked down at their hands as he intertwined his fingers with hers. She looked back at the stall and didn't notice him looking down at her.

Markus hugged her to him when she jumped into his arms. Whispering into her ear he said, "Darling, I never said that you weren't tough enough to get the after birth. I just meant that as long as I'm here you wouldn't have to." Noticing her happy mood his picked her up and swung her around then slowly let her back to her feet. He smiled happily down at her now, all former woes forgotten for the moment.
He left the wheel barrel where it was and they went to watch Firefly with her foals. They fell into a comfortable silence for a moment while Markus thought. Mommy and babies were doing just fine and he was proud of Firefly. Maiden mares often had some issues, but she did wonerfully and one could tell she was going to be a good mother. His fingers laced with Hannah's unconciously at the thought.
"Hannah, what are you doing tomorrow night?" Markus really hadn't thought this through and it was quite an impetuous decision for him. "Because I would like to ask if you would accompany me to dinner?" He wanted to take her to the fanciest restraunt in town because he felt she deserved it for over coming some of her headstrongness today. Plus he really wouldn't mind seeing her dress up for once. The thought brought a impish smile to his face. Of course the cost really didn't matter in his situation, he just wanted to give her the best of everything.
When he looked back up both foals were standing and nursing from mom. Markus smiled at the two of them and squeezed Hannah's hand. "Ok, you can go see you're girl now, but be careful. She'll be protective of her babies." He released her hand so she could enter the stall. "Also make sure you don't pull the foals away from nursing. They need to be with their mother. You can pet them though." Markus gave her a little shove towards the door to tell her it was ok.

Hannah looked at him when he asked her what she was doing tomorrow night, and she looked at him and no words came out. That was sudden, but she knew what he was going for. He wanted to take her out on a date. What the heck? Why not let the poor man treat her to dinner after hell she had put him through recently. Heaven help Markus for putting up with a spitfire like Hannah. She gave him a little smile and nodded, " Alright Markus, I accept. You've put up with my stubbornness for one day. That deserves a night on the town," she said and laughed and let go on his hand so she could walk inside the stall.
Hannah quietly walked inside, and smiled seeing Firefly. The mare nickered at her and she stroked her face as she carefully approached the babies. She placed one hand on the little palomino and checked. A little boy! She checked the other and saw it was a girl. She looked at Markus and smiled, " I got one of each," she said almost crying.
