Full Description:
Derek stands right at 5'11, with broad shoulder but lean build. He has dark brown, wavy hair and blue/green eyes. He generally allows no more than a 5 o'clock shadow, though he has been know to let his hair grow along his jaw-line.

Personality:
Derek is what many consider the strong and silent type. Not exactly one to follow stereotypes, he is very business oriented and opinionated. He is the type that thrives on control, though certainly not to the point that affects other's lives. He can have quite a temper, often seeming brooding and disconnected from the world. He is essentially the alpha male, with a substantial ego and the need to dominate a room ingrained into his mind. He is blunt to the point of cruel at times, not seeing a point in twisting the truth or beating around the bush. He loathes being lied to, and often his temper flares if he feels that he has been. He doesn't care mindless chit-chat, often finding it boring and aimless. He would rather be considered stark and cold, the chatty and overzealous in his attentions to others.

He has a thing for boats, finding himself as a carpenter in his off time. He doesn't sail, but rather will make a sailboat for the pure satisfaction of completing it. He comes from money, but doesn't carry the heir or being rich around. He would rather people assume he made his money from his job than an inheritance. He has had past relationships that make him wary of connection with someone, even if he doesn't avoid people or act as though he is nervous of them.

History:
Derek Farland was born to April and David Farland in Manhattan. Extremely wealthy from the oil business, his parents were extreme elitists, feeling as though they were better than everyone around them. They tried raising him to regard those who didn't have a fortune as beneath him. Instead, from a young age, he saw how they hurt people by the way they lived their lives. As a teenager he was considered their problem child, because he didn't exactly care to live the jock lifestyle or become a member of the very popular Polo team in the Country Club.

After graduating, his father planned for him to join him at his oil company, though Derek had other ideas for his future. He went to Harvard, where he thrived as the bookish type, excelling in most of his classes. That was where he met Rebecka and began dating her. In the beginning their relationship was genial. He was the man who opened doors and was slightly over-protective, if a bit controlling at the same time. He allowed her plenty of freedom to do as she wished and doted on her. As their relationship progressed she became jealous of any woman he valued as a friend. She desired his money and family name, which he wouldn't figure out for a while. It started off where she would go on an on about things that she couldn't afford but extremely desired. In the end, however, she would demand things outright on the threat of leaving. He hadn't realized that the entire time their relationship was just her key to amassing money she couldn't obtain otherwise.

Graduating from Harvard, he took directly to law. His passion from Environmental law, as he loved the outdoors and thrived on saving ever bit of nature that he could. He became an Intern at a prestigious firm in New York and worked his way up in the next few years. Eventually he was offered a Partnership, when one of the partners in the firm retired. He threw himself into his work, very passionate about his job and enjoying every moment. Eventually, however, he realized he was disconnected from the world. He had lost himself to his work and needed a way out.

In an effort to save himself before he became like his father, he decided that he would do field work for a while, to truly know what he was fighting for. That was when he decided to move to Harrisbury, Virginia. His plan was to stay for about a year or two, before moving back to the city and picking up where he had left off.
